by Molly McAdams

I adore Molly McAdams’ novels and so I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to be a part of this blog tour. Make sure to check out ALL her books. You can find the entire list on her website.

ABOUT SHOW ME HOW:

After her first love was ripped from her grasp four years earlier, Charlie Easton was sure she would never be able to trust anyone with the shattered pieces of her heart again. That is, until Deacon Carver forces himself into her life, and makes those pieces swirl in chaos. But Charlie doesn’t know how to let him in… until a stranger stumbles upon a notebook filled with her innermost secrets, and shows her how.

Deacon Carver is known for sleeping his way through the town of Thatch, as well as the surrounding cities—something he used to take pride in. But that persona has haunted Deacon ever since he decided to leave that life behind for the girl he wants more than anything: Charlie Easton.

But when another girl falls into Deacon’s life, allowing him to be himself without judgment for his past, will their conversations hinder his relationship with Charlie … even if he’s never seen her?

Q&A:

  1. If you could trade places with one of your characters for a day – anyone in this series, which one would it be and why?

This series? Um, then I’m for sure going to have to say Charlie. Reason … have you met Deacon? 😉 That’s what I thought.

  1. How did you choose the name(s) of your character(s)? Feel free to choose just one to save time! :)

I actually take forever to choose the names for my characters. It’s a good three-hour process for each one of my stories. Once I have the characters in mind, then I sit there scrolling through name sites for hours and hours until I find the names that fit them. I have a list of names that I absolutely love just sitting on my computer, and I have yet to use any of them because they haven’t fit the characters.

  1. Did you have any scenes you found difficult to write? If so, how did you get through it?

Yes, all of the scenes that involved Collin and Harlow in To The Stars. Not sure how I got through the actual writing of the scenes—actually I’m pretty sure I didn’t breathe while I wrote them. But as soon as I finished just one Collin scene, I would have to walk away from my computer and go lie down because I would feel so emotionally and physically exhausted, and would be shaking too hard to continue.

  1. What lesson or message would you hope readers would take from this book or series and why?

Oh my goodness, there are so many. The biggest one from this series; is that no one has to continue living with domestic violence. There are ways to get help if you feel like you can’t get out. The other main one; is that moving on with your life doesn’t mean you’re forgetting or leaving behind whoever passed away. Remember that they would want you to continue living.

  1. What qualities do you feel are important in building a long lasting relationship that you feel your characters needed to learn?

Trust. Trust, trust, trust. So much trust. That was a huge one in Letting Go and again in Show Me How, and in a way it was there—just a tad different—in To The Stars. In Show Me How, for example, Charlie wanted to believe that Deacon could change, but in the back of her mind, she kept waiting for the day when he would revert back to the old Deacon. And I think that if Deacon really thought that Charlie knew him and who he wanted to be, he would’ve never continued speaking to Words.

  1. Do you have any writing habits that are critical to your process? If so, what are they?

When I’m first getting into a story, I have to spend a lot of time just thinking about the story, and letting it develop. It has to be quiet, and it has to be dark, so I usually lay in bed. But when I actually start writing, I have to have music really loud, or else I can’t concentrate.

  1. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned during your journey as a published author?

That it’s always worth it to write what you believe in, over what you think everyone else will want.

ABOUT NEW CHARITY BLUE:New-Charity-Blues Cover

In the wake of a devastating plague, two communities emerge as bastions of survival. One is called the City, and its people scrabble for scraps in the wasteland. The other, New Charity, enjoys the bounty of its hydroelectric dam and refuses City denizens so much as a drop of precious water. When City-dweller Cressyda inherits her father’s ranch within New Charity, she becomes intent on opening the dam to all—no matter the cost.

But when Syd reunites with her old best friend, Casandra, a born seer and religious acolyte, she realizes that her plans could destroy the fragile lives they’ve built in order to survive. What’s more, the strange magic securing the dam’s operations could prove deadly if disturbed. Yet when Syd discovers evidence that her father might have been murdered, she is more determined than ever to exact revenge on New Charity’s corrupt.

Pitted against Cas, as well as her own family, Syd must decide how to secure the survival of both settlements without tipping them over the brink to utter annihilation. In this intense and emotional reimagining of the Trojan War epic, two women clash when loyalty, identity, community, and family are all put to the ultimate test.

NOVEL SECRETS:

Little Bramble House on the PrairieWho R U Blog - Novel Secrets Post Photo

Growing up, our house sat in the hills of eastern Montana, about 15-20 minutes east of “town.” As such, a little girl like me made her own adventures – on foot, on a bicycle, or – most commonly – on horseback. I had big dreams about riding beyond the horizon, loping over the brown velvety hills to see whatever was on the other side – presumably more velvety hills, or a mountain, or a river, or some wild, green, oasis in our northern desert.

My favorite spot was a clubhouse of sorts in the ravine behind the barn. A cluster of mature juniper bushes had grown into one another, forming a two-room shelter. Shaped not unlike a figure eight, the Bramble House, as I named it, is the basis for a setting in New Charity Blues. Troy’s shelter in the ravine, where he takes Cas after the chaotic Goodwill Dinner, is an extension of the dreams I once had for decorating and adorning my secret hideout. I had hoped for furniture and candles, but what remained was a broom like branch I used for clearing the soft needles from the ground so as to keep them from getting inside my peanut butter sandwiches.

At night, I visited my other favorite spot. I would take my Walkman and hike out to a sandstone outcropping that overlooked the lights of the town in the distance. I wanted to be home with my horses but I also wanted to know what was in those lights.

By the time I left for college, the lights had won the battle. I fell in love with Los Angeles – the way the city grew together, the low hum of energy 24-hours-a-day. I loved how orange the light was, the tiny lizards in the bushes, the smell of the eucalyptus trees.

These memories – these strong bonds to the places I came of age – both as a child and as a young woman – begged me to remember them as I wrote about Syd, a woman torn between love for the City and love for the rugged hills of New Charity. Sharing my secret bramble house was the best way I could think to invite readers into the life of those of us who grew up dreaming horses into unicorns, sandstone into thrones, and trees into castles.

—a Boomerang novel—

By Noelle August

Two aspiring musicians must choose between their careers…and their sizzling attraction for each other in the final Boomerang novel.

Praise for NOELLE AUGUST

“Boomerang, the first book in a new series by August, is a flirty, hilarious read. New Adult readers will devour this book, loving its rapid-fire witty dialogue and engaging characters.”

  • Booklist, STARRED Review
  • “August…delivers a solid new adult trilogy launch.” Publishers Weekly
William Morrow is thrilled to publish Noelle August’s much-anticipated novel: BOUNCE (William Morrow Trade Paperback, On-sale: August 25th, ISBN: 9780062331113; $13.99).  Noelle August is an incredibly fresh and welcome voice in New Adult, and readers can’t wait to revisit favorite characters and fall in love with new ones in the final book of this beloved trilogy!

Playing the occasional club gig just isn’t cutting it for twenty-two-year-old cellist Skyler Canby, who’s trying to support herself and her mother back home in Kentucky. Persuaded by her best friend Beth to accompany her on an audition for the first feature film launched by Blackwood Entertainment, she figures why not? Beth’s a shoe-in for the lead, but maybe Skyler’s newly dyed pink hair will help her stand out enough to score a small speaking part. Never in her wildest dreams does Skyler imagine she’ll land the starring role—or that she’ll have her shoes knocked off her feet by the kiss she shares with her nineteen-year-old audition partner, Grey Blackwood.

After throwing a party that causes thousands of dollars of damage to his older brother’s home, reckless musician Grey Blackwood gets roped into working off his debt on the set of his CEO brother’s newest project. Grey spends his days fetching coffee and doing odd jobs, but he lives for nights when he performs with his band. He knows if he can stay focused, success as a singer is just around the corner. But that’s tough with a distracting pink-haired girl occupying his every waking thought.

Skyler and Grey have every reason to resist each other. But, like a song neither of them can get out of their minds, they have no choice but to go where the music takes them.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Question: What do you get when friends pen a story with heart, plenty of laughs, and toe-curling kissing scenes? Answer: Noelle August, the pseudonym for renowned editor and award-winning writer Lorin Oberweger and New York Times bestselling YA author Veronica Rossi, the masterminds behind the Boomerang series. You can visit them at NoelleAugust.com@Noelle_August,

Additional Praise for NOELLE AUGUST

“This debut entry for August in the new adult genre is refreshingly charming. Absent are the tortured baggage tropes that permeate the category, which is a welcome change. Readers who enjoyed Megan McCafferty’s “Jessica Darling” series (especially the later ones set in college) will want to read this.”
   — Library Journal on BOOMERANG

“…your summer fling in paperback…”
   — WomensHealthMag.com on BOOMERANG

“Boomerang is a novel with substance, fabulously detailed, and August is a fine writer — able to draw a nuanced character. Ethan is a dream, but still realistic, and Mia is every girl’s best friend. Interesting plots, dynamic characters and, of course, scintillating sex make this a new adult title to emulate.”
   — RT Book Reviews on BOOMERANG

“Readers will enjoy seeing more of the mental and emotional level of the relationship being developed, in addition to the physical — a nice change of pace for the genre.”
   — RT Book Reviews on REBOUND

Don’t miss the first two in the series!

My review:

Bounce by Noelle August

BOUNCE sucked me in and tugged at my emotional heartstrings. For anyone looking for a romantic and meaningful NA contemporary series, BOOMERANG definitely fits those qualifications.

When Skyler and Grey are paired together to read a scene for Blackwood Entertainment, sparks fly. The only problem is that Sykler wasn’t planning on getting the role she was playing and Grey was only there as an audition partner because he owed Adam, his brother, big time for trashing his condo. Two completely unexpected circumstances brings on an attraction that’s hard for either one to resist.

Here’s what I loved:
1. The complexity of the characters.
2. Friendship and loyalty. I was really happy to see family loyalty and loyal friends.
3. Characters from the pas.t
4. Grey having to face his demons.
5. Skyler sticking up for herself with her dad and her mom.
6. Grey making Skyler a priority in his life and really thinking about what she means to him.
7. Skyler playing the lead role in a film with very little acting background. I love that dreams can come true.
8. Pineapple on pizza?!?!
9. What pushed Grey over the edge to leave home and to go live with his brother, Adam!
10. This wasn’t a novel that was loaded with sex scenes for the purpose of being gratuitous. The relationship seemed natural and real.
11. Grey’s persistence of his dream. It made me really happy to see that he kept at it, even when family didn’t always seem to approve.
12. Grey’s younger than Skyler, but it wasn’t a HUGE ISSUE! After high school, it seems to me that younger or older by a few years no longer matters. I liked this aspect of this novel!

Another winner in the series! Definitely recommend.

Thank you so much to the publisher for the review copy!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Love can be lost but never forgotten. Beautiful, sophisticated, and engaged to the son of a Senator, Evie Masterson has the perfect life. Except for one thing: it’s all based on a lie. Five years ago, she created a new identity for herself and cut all ties to her criminal past. But she can’t run forever, because something she witnessed years ago comes back to haunt her. And the only person there to help is the man she thought she left behind forever—the one man she’s never been able to forget.

Devastatingly gorgeous and just as ruthless, Riley Everett is the criminal for hire who once stole Evie’s heart. Years have gone by, but he’s never been able to forget her either. Now her life is in jeopardy, and even after all this time, he’d still do anything to protect her, even if that means breaking into her mansion and stealing her away.

As they hide from the world, their long-lost passion reignites. But despite their undeniable chemistry, Evie can’t give up the perfect life she’s been working toward…and Riley has no part in it.

Q & A:

  1. What kind of research did you do to write this series?

I had to research this way more than I had to research anything else I’ve written. I watched self defense videos, looked up sedatives, spoke to nurses about bullet wound treatment, talked to dozens of different people who held a specific set of knowledge or experience that was relevant to the book. Lots and lots and lots.

  1. Is there any significance to any of the names you chose for the characters?

Their real names? No. I just liked them. Their crew names, yes. Ghost was chosen for the reason he told Madison in Captive—they call him that because people don’t know he’s there until it’s too late. For Riley, I chose Kid because it was something Riley had to face his whole life—growing up in his brother’s shadow.

  1. What do you think is critical for relationships to work long-term.

Communication, trust, friendship, and passion.

  1. Is there anything that’s surprised you during the writing or publishing process?

Even though I was told a dozen times to prepare for how slow publishing moves, it’s still jarring to be in the middle of it and just…waiting.

  1. Do you have any pet peeves? If so, what are they? And have you ever written them into a novel?

I have so many pet peeves, it’s not even funny. People who don’t use their blinkers or who drive slow in the left lane or who don’t use the turn lane to actually turn. People who misuse the word literally. Close talkers. And probably a dozen more I’m forgetting. I have not written them into a book yet, but I probably should.

Book Excerpt:

All that matters is the moment when a connection is made. The touch of a hand. Leading right to the hear. Waking all those desires lurking in the dark corners, the thrill of moving as one. Hearts beating, hurting, screaming, no longer restrained. No longer fearing the strangers who judge, taking all choice away. Allowing the devil to rise above it all. Unleashing all the power and control. Letting go.

Daniel. Shaking my head doesn’t help to get him out of my mind. In the mirror, I try to still the image I see and swipe my make-up sponge one last time under my eye, finishing the look of eau de natural.

Picking up the curling iron, I twirl a piece of hair around the barrel and let it drop into a perfect curl. Through the hiss of the hairspray I’m using to keep my curls in shape, I hear the door close.

“I’m in here,” I call from the bathroom.

Stopping short in the doorway a surprised looking Jonathan says, “Hey Brooklyn. What are you doing to your hair?”

“Oh this? Trying something new. Does it look stupid?” I ask as I put the curling iron down in the sink bowl.

“Nope, just never seen you try this hard. You have a date or something?”

I don’t have to turn around to know he’s smiling. I hear it in his voice. Plus, I know he’s heard from Greg about Daniel and I wonder if I really am going to need to have this conversation with Jonathan of all people. “Meeting the usual people at The Wharf. Seeing a band. Hanging out.”

“Okay, if you say so. Have a good time and be home by midnight, so you don’t turn into a pumpkin.”

EXCERPT:

Andrea

“You’ve been avoiding me all day.”

“Have not.”

He cocked his head to the side and raised both brows. “You practically hid in your room or attached yourself to Syd all day.”

“I was…I was spending girl-time with her,” I said. “And napping.”

“Andrea…”

He’d been right. I had avoided him. Apparently, I wasn’t doing that great of a job of it. Scorched ebook cover

“The same with last night. You barely talked to me.”

“What?” Dumbfounded, I felt like screaming that word. “I barely talked to youYou ignored me.”

He stared at me. “Andy, I—“

“This is stupid. This whole thing is stupid.” I lifted the bottle.

A moment passed and he asked, “Do you really think you need another beer?”

Annoyed, I slowly brought the bottle to my mouth and took a long drink. “Does that answer your question?”

The hue of his blue eyes deepened. “Look, I’m not trying to be a dick—“

“You might want to try harder. Just sayin’ Might just be my opinion, but thought I’d share.”

He opened his mouth and then snapped it shut. Several seconds passed. “You know, I didn’t’ say that shit to you to piss you off.”

I wanted to point out everything he’d done to piss me off, but…but shit on a brick. Anything that I told him would betray how I felt about him, and well, I was

already embarrassing myself enough without going there. “You breathed,” I decided, nodding, and totally proud of myself. “How about that?”

Shaking his head, he rested his elbows on the island. “You can usually do better than that.”

“It’s not worth my time to do better.” I flounced past him. Well, I might have staggered past him, but in my head, I flounced like a Grade A Uppity Chick, and it

was awesome.

“I wish you wouldn’t drink so much.”

My feet stopped. Dammit. My feet had a mind of their own, and they had stopped because he’d said that so quietly, not with an ounce of derision or scorn.

Actually, it sounded like a plea. The alcohol churned in my stomach. All I could see was his look of pity.

“Why do you drink like this?” he asked.

To relax. To not act like a freak. To forget. To remember. To be funny. To have people like me. To not care if they do or don’t. To have fun. To just not care. A

burning sensation rolled down my back as my head continued to shout out the answers. I just didn’t want to care.

I didn’t say any of that. “You drink.”

“I do. And sometimes I drink and I get drunk, but not every time.”

Slowly, I faced him. He wasn’t looking at me. His eyes were on the island. “I don’t get drunk every time.”

He shook his head again. “Andrea, you either get plastered or damn near close. Every time.”

“That’s not…” I trailed off, and yeah, even I could see where he was right. I could probably count on one hand how many times I’d only had two beers or two

shots and then stopped. Come to think of it, I wasn’t sure if I ever had.

“My dad got shitfaced all the time,” he continued. “Never thought that I’d be interested in a girl who was the same way.”

My brain registered two things at once. He was interested in me, which wasn’t a big duh. I mean, he’d had his hands in my pants more than once, so yeah, I

should’ve known that. But he compared me to his dad, a man I’d recently discovered he pretty much loathed, which pretty much canceled out the first part. Hurt

invaded every cell and festered under the skin. The back of my throat burned and I wanted to rush away.

But I didn’t. “That kind of makes you twisted.”

Another weak laugh came out of him. “I guess it kind of does.

A Boomerang Novel

by Noelle August

Publisher: William Morrow

Buy Links: Amazon / B&N / IndieBound

At Boomerang, one night can change everything…

Noelle August has taken the New Adult genre by storm, and readers can’t wait to see what chaos, confusion, and connections arise at the Boomerang offices next.

Adam Blackwood has it all. At twenty-three, he’s fabulously wealthy, Ryan Gosling-hot and at the top of his game in the business world. His life is perfect, until a scandal from his past resurfaces and threatens to knock the tech wunderkind down and throw his company, Boomerang, a hook-up site for millennials, into chaos.

Alison Quick, the twenty-one-year-old daughter of a business tycoon—and the very ex-girlfriend of Boomerang’s former intern, Ethan—has a problem of her own. After nearly flunking out in her senior year of college, she has one chance to redeem herself to her father by proving that she deserves a place in his corporate empire. That means spearheading her father’s plan to sink big money into Adam’s company and launch it into the stratosphere—provided Adam has no skeletons in his closet.

When the two meet, their sizzling chemistry makes it tough to keep things strictly professional. But when Alison discovers Adam’s secret, she knows she should bring it right to her father, who’ll leverage it for his own gain and use it to ruin Adam. The only problem: she’s falling for Adam—hard.

Will earning her father’s approval come at the price of losing her first real love? Or can Adam and Alison leave behind past mistakes and conquer the world—together?

REBOUND will be available wherever books and e-books are sold on February 10th, 2015 (ISBN: 9780062331083 | $13.99 | e-ISBN: 9780062331090 | $11.99).

Excerpt #2 – Adam POV

Ali laughs. Her gaze feels like sunshine on my back, but I don’t turn around. I pull my wetsuit up to my waist, adjusting myself so I’m comfortable. The cool Neoprene layer feels familiar and my body responds, my heart thumping hard, anticipation rushing through my veins. The prospect of the ocean always does this to me. This has nothing to do with the girl behind me.

“Adam?”

Ali’s voice is close. Turning, I almost bump into her.

Her wetsuit is all the way on, which is good. And terrible.

“What’s up?” I ask.

She smells like suntan oil and peaches. This close, I see that her cheeks are turning slightly pink from the sun. With her hair pulled back, no makeup, and the wetsuit covering her completely, she looks better than she has all week at the office. Better than she did in the Catwoman costume. There’s something powerful about her now. The way her slender legs are planted firmly on the swaying boat, like she’s not trying at all. She’s at home on the water. This from an admitted equestrian. I can only imagine what she’s like with her horses.

“Sorry, but . . .” She smiles and points at her back. “My zipper’s jammed.” She turns around and pulls her ponytail up. “Can you help me out?”

“Sure. You want this on, right? Just want to be sure.”

I can’t see her face, but I know she’s smiling. “Yes. On please.”

I allow myself a moment to enjoy the way she looks right in front of me. Then I take the zipper leash, letting my knuckles drift over her back, just above the knot of her bikini.

If I weren’t completely focused on her, I’d have missed the way she curls slightly toward me.

Focus, Blackwood. Zip the wetsuit up.

My Review:

Rebound (Boomerang, #2)Rebound by Noelle August

This is book 2 in the NA Boomerang Series. Thank you to the publisher, William Morrow, for the review copy.

Overall impression: A heartfelt, romantic novel that will have readers swooning and cheering for Adam and Alison. Perfect for anyone who is looking for a NA contemporary series.
Cover: I love it. Sweet, fits into the times they spend in or on water.

There were so many things to love about REBOUND.

The complexity of Adam’s life and what drives him to succeed is fascinating. Alison’s struggles with her past and the poor choices she’s made, haunts her. Her love for neglected horses and her ability to help them thrive was a wonderful element in this novel. Noelle August did a great job of taking readers onto the ski slopes, surfing, sailing, and sea diving. The descriptions put me right into the scenes, and because of it, readers get to know the passions of these characters.

The chemistry is incredible, starting from the Halloween party. Alison is Catwoman and Adam is Zorro. It goes from there. These two spend a lot of time together because Adam is looking to get Alison’s father to invest in his film production company. Alison’s father is a selfish, greedy, cheating bastard. Family loyalty is everything to him. Thank goodness Alison ends up seeing who he really is.

Readers, you do not have to read these books in order. Perhaps some of the subtler details will make more sense if you do, but it’s not necessary. I DO recommend this Boomerang Series for anyone looking for NA contemporary romances novels.

Release Day Blitz: THE RETURN by Jennifer L. Armentrout – Review & Giveaway
Feb 16th, 2015 by Liza Wiemer

The Return Release Week Blitz banner

Whooooooooot! It’s the Release Blitz for Jennifer L. Armentrout’s THE RETURN! THE RETURN is a New Adult Paranormal Romance published by Spencer Hill and is a part of Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Titan Series. Seth is looking to be just as dangerously delicious as we all hoped!!

Amazon | Barnes and Noble | iBooks | Booksamillion

THE RETURN Excerpt:

I was a half-blood, but I was also the Apollyon, a child of a pure and a half, a union that had been forbidden for thousands of years because an Apollyon was more powerful than any pure or half could ever hope to be.

And I always got to the traitors’ hideouts before they did, so the Sentinels were usually left with the cleanup, which I was sure absolutely thrilled them.

The first to enter was a female half-blood dressed just as I was. Her black hair was pulled back in a neat little knot at the top of her head. She was older, probably in her mid-thirties. It was pretty rare for a Sentinel to live that long. Her dark skin paled as she stopped just inside the entrance. She clenched titanium daggers in her hands like she expected something vicious to pop out from under the bloody mess.

The female Sentinel tipped her chin up, and the overhead light sliced across her broad cheekbones. She bore a jagged scar under her right eye, the skin lighter in tone. She saw me and froze.

My smile widened.

Behind her, another Sentinel rushed in, almost mowing her over. He saw me and whispered, “Seth.”

He’d said my name like I was the monster under his bed, and I sort of liked that. Then another Sentinel and another rolled in. The fifth took one look at my interior design work and keeled over. Slamming his hands on his knees, he hurled up his dinner.

Nice.

Our society existed completely unknown to the average mortal and had operated under what was known as the Breed Order for thousands of years. The Order had been dismantled, which meant halfs were no longer forced to choose between becoming Sentinels—hunting down violent creatures, protecting pures, enforcing laws, and otherwise usually dying pretty damn quickly on the job—or servants, which was a job that really wasn’t a job, but more like slavery. Since then, many pampered pures had signed on to be Sentinels, making up for the loss of the halfs who’d pretty much said “screw this shit, I’m out.”

This wasn’t necessarily a good thing.

For example, the dumbass puking all over my blood-covered floor was a pure. When he straightened, his face a greenish hue, he backed away, shaking his head. “I can’t,” he gasped out. “I can’t do this.”

Then he turned and hauled ass out the doors.
I sighed. This was why we couldn’t have nice things.

THE RETURN Synopsis:

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…

It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

My review:

The Return (Titan, #1)The Return by Jennifer L. Armentrout

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Another winner by Jennifer Armentrout. Loved seeing another side of Seth and deeply appreciated Josie, the girl who sees the best in Seth and brings it out in him, too. The Greek Mythology is fantastic and I really loved the connections to the Covenant Series.

I’m was completely captivated by the story, and even though I received an ARC at BEA and subsequently read it within a day, all these months later I can recall the details of what happened between Josie and Seth. The bind Seth is in with the Titans is a difficult one, and he’s still reeling from his actions in the Covenant series. He’s serious about trying to be a better “person” and most definitely doesn’t feel like he’s worthy of love or forgiveness for his past sins. He made a lot of mistakes and was under the influence of some pretty bad “gods” and semi-gods,” and now he has to pay up.

I love Josie and how she responds to Seth. She sees him clearly, flaws and all, and Seth sees how different and special she is. He wants her to have the very best, which in his mind means someone better than him. Josie totally rocks as a strong female character. Exactly what Seth needs.

I love this series. I love the chemistry, the mythology, and the action. There’s danger and heart pounding scenes that will have you racing to find out what happens next. I cannot wait for the next book!

“Okay, now add the flour, but—” It’s too late, a puff of white exploding in Winter’s face before I can get the words out or reach to flip the switch. “You need to turn the mixer to low.”

She spins around, her cheeks covered in random white spots, some of the flour dusting her hair. “You couldn’t say that before, ‘Now add the flour’?” Her voice is low, her eyes narrowed, and I take a step back.

“Well, yeah, I guess I could’ve, but I just sort of figured you’d know enough not to add loose flour to a wildly spinning mixer.”

“Oh, you figured I’d know enough for that, huh? Even after I told you I’ve never made cookies before? Even then?”

She’s advancing on me now, and I shouldn’t be retreating like a scared animal. I have more than a foot on her, a hundred-plus pounds, but she looks pissed. And that glint in her eye tells me she’s up to something. I glance down at her hand, seeing a measuring cup half filled with flour, and I realize what she’s going to do a split-second before she does, but not soon enough to dodge it.

A cloud of white powder hits me straight in the face, and I cough as I inhale some. Wiping away the dust from my eyes, I say, “I can’t believe you did that.”

“Oh, well, I just figured you’d know enough to duck.” She shrugs and offers me a saccharine smile.

“I don’t think you want to start this with me, baby.”

“In case you missed the flour in your face a second ago, I already started it, baby.”

I stare her down, then reach over, grabbing the bowl of melted chocolate—my mom’s secret ingredient in her cookies—and dip my fingers into it. Winter narrows her eyes at me and takes a step back. “Don’t you dare.”

“Where you goin’? I thought you wanted to get messy.”

“No, I wanted you to get messy. I didn’t have a choice with this,” she says as she gestures to where the flour hit her. She darts her eyes down to the bowl of chocolate, then back up to my face. “Don’t, Cade. You’re going to get me dirty, and I have to be at work soon.”

On September 10, 2014 Melissa de la Cruz came to Milwaukee and spoke to a wonderful crowd at the Oak Creek Public Library. Then, a few of us bloggers had the privilege of hanging out with Melissa at her hotel to talk about a wide range of subjects. What can I say except that I am deeply impressed with Melissa’s sense of humor, perseverance, dedication to her craft, and her accomplishments. She grew up with supportive parents, but they didn’t quite expect that she would actually go after her dream and become a published author. But she did! And what a success she has become! It may look like it’s been easy, but it’s been quite the journey for Melissa. She had books rejected and had worked for six months on the TV pilot for the Blue Bloods Series, only to have the studio say no. That was six months of working for ZERO dollars! Nada.

But . . . good things did happen!

Melissa’s  WITCHES OF EAST END series turned into a series on Lifetime. (I love the show!)

My deepest thanks to Daniel at Boswell Book Company for arranging the event and to Cassie Mandel at Hachette for the Meet & Greet, the review copy as well as the SIGNED giveaway copy that I get to share with YOU!

From Goodreads:

The Vampires of Manhattan is “hipster horror”–the memorable characters from her Blue Bloods series are older and cooler than before, trying to build “Millennial” lives in the bustle of Manhattan while battling forces of evil and, of course, each other.

Hero of this sexy, paranormal action tale is Oliver Hazard-Perry, former human conduit, and Manhattan’s only human-turned-vampire, now the head of the Blue Bloods Coven. When his all-too-human lover is found murdered on the eve of the coven’s annual Four Hundred Ball–a celebration meant to usher in a new era in vampire society, and to mark the re-unification of the Coven after decades of unrest and decay–Oliver is devastated.

Now, not only is he trying to create a new world order for the immortal elite, he’s the prime suspect and is stalked by the newly installed head of the vampire secret police. Because according to the new rules, vampires who take human life can now be executed. Burned.

How can an immortal sentenced to die fight back? He has to find the killer–and the answers lie deep in vampire lore.

My Review:

Vampires of Manhattan (The New Blue Bloods Coven, #1)Vampires of Manhattan by Melissa de la Cruz

Thank you, Hachette Books, for the review copy and on my blog – readers have a chance to win a SIGNED COPY! through October 13, 2014, 11:59 PM CST. http://wp.me/pAaOH-SO

The cover: Gorgeous! Perfect! Definitely does exactly what a cover should do: peak your interest and create a desire to find out more!

Never read the Blue Bloods Series? Don’t worry! You can start with VAMPIRES OF MANHATTAN and follow along beautifully. The novel is geared to New Adults/Adults. It’s for anyone who appreciates great world building, fantasy, vampires, or outstanding storytelling. The characters jump off the page and keep you guessing. Kingsley happens to be one of my favorites.

The Blue Bloods won the war and are celebrating their victory of Lucifer. But wait . . . someone is killing young adults girls and burning or painting pentagrams all over Manhattan. Alarm bells sound for the soon-to-be Regis Oliver and his human female familiar Finn, who is planning the Four Hundred Ball to commemorate the victory. Someone wants to stop the celebration. Venator Ara Scott is on the case to find out who. I love Ara. She’s a strong, flawed character, struggling to make a difference and keep Manhattan peaceful. Maybe someday, she’ll do more than kick some major butt. Maybe she’ll find love?

I love the mystery and surprises of this novel. For Blue Bloods fans, you’ll be thrilled with the continuation of the series. For people who love to read NA, you’ll gobble up this sophisticated book geared toward you. It has a plot that will have you hooked and begging for the next book in the series.

VAMPIRES OF MANHATTAN is a page-turner. I can’t wait for more.
